Where to eat in New Zealand
13,220 cafés, restaurants, takeaways, bars and pubs across 17 regions, compiled from open data.
Of the 17,658 venues we hold across New Zealand, 13,220 are places to eat — 75% of the total. They break down as 3,648 cafés, 4,558 restaurants, 3,742 takeaways, 649 bars and 623 pubs.
Distribution is heavily uneven. Auckland alone holds 5,243 of them — 40% of the national total — and the top three regions (Auckland, Canterbury and Wellington) account for 63% between them. The thinnest is Chatham Islands with 2. Averaged across the 1,482 named places we hold, that is 8.9 per town — a figure almost no individual town matches, because the median settlement has a handful and the cities have hundreds.
6,830 of the 13,220 eating places carry a cuisine tag (52%). Nationally the most common are indian (681), burger (670), chinese (666), pizza (641), coffee shop (584) and fish and chips (518). Those proportions are worth holding in mind when a town page says it over- or under-indexes on something: the comparison is always against this national mix, not against an ideal.
On data quality: 3,936 publish opening hours (30%), 2,847 list a website (22%), and 894 record step-free access (7%). 454 carry at least six recorded attributes, which is the bar a venue has to clear before we give it a page of its own — 3% of the total. The rest are listed on their town pages. Every gap is an unrecorded attribute rather than a known absence, because all of this comes from open data: OpenStreetMap for the venues themselves, public registers for verification. Nothing here is scraped from a commercial directory, and no venue has paid to appear or to rank.
